In the first of our new blog series, Sustainable Workplaces – Buildings for the Future, we choose to highlight an incredible building we had the privilege of touring last week – Plus X in Brighton.
A mixed use regeneration project in Lewes Road, Brighton, is being transformed by developers U+I into a buzzing hub for the community. Preston Barracks, previously owned by the MoD, dates back to 1793. The scheme will deliver affordable housing, student accommodation, and a new home for Brighton University’s Business School with Plus X taking centre stage – a 40,000 sqft, 7 storey office building.
Plus X is on track to be the first building in the South East to be accredited WELL building standard: Platinum – the highest rating achievable from The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). WELL is a global movement focused on transforming buildings to enable people to thrive. There are 11 concepts that the building standard is built on, covering elements such as water and air quality, exposure to light, availability of healthy and nutritious food such as fruit and vegetables, mental health strategies and programmes and promotion of physical activity.
Alex Young, Location Manager at Plus X Brighton, walked us through the space and it’s clear that the innovation hub staff are truly passionate about the building, the community and all the wonderful benefits that the scheme provides. Alex showed us the rooftop terrace and bar called Airspace which has its own garden where you will get “fresh mint for your mojito”. She explains that all the staff are trained in mental health so they can support the wellbeing of their members. She shows us the front desk where members can pick up a desk lamp and blanket on arrival to take to their workspace for optimum light and temperature level. The bathrooms are gender neutral and Alex explains that each bathroom is painted a unique colour for each day of the week. The coffee is roasted locally, the café serves food free of nasty ingredients, members can hop on a Brighton Bike out the front of the building and take the 10 minute cycle to the seafront for a breath of fresh air or read a book on resilience in the library. Fancy a productivity-boosting yoga session? You can check in with a Monday morning class and check out with Friday afternoon session to finish the week in balance. You’ll be encouraged to take the stairs where you’ll be inspired by mood-enhancing colour by local artists Art+Believe on the furlong staircase.
It’s difficult not to feel energised by this concept of sustainability, community, health and well-being – and it’s clearly a workplace of the future where productivity can thrive within an inspiring yet balanced environment.
